Who is this course for and what’s it about?

The exam preparation course is just that: an intensive course that prepares you for the exam by focusing on specific exam questions and timing on topics that are troublesome for you. You might be struggling with longer written answers, for example, or not know how to plan quickly. Whatever you want to focus on we’ll begin with a short questionnaire and a phone call so I can tailor the course to your needs and you can make an immediate start.

How much time will it take?

The course requires commitment obviously. To get the best from it, prepare to set aside a few hours each week and submit an assignment to me promptly (so every 7-10 days). For my part I shall mark and give feedback on your assignments within 48 hours and I’ll be available by phone or email to answer any queries you might have.

It's never too early to plan for an exam but depending on the time and commitment you can give, this course should ideally take 8-12 weeks. If you’ve only got a few weeks, get in touch and I shall adapt it for you.

How is the course delivered?

A great thing about this course is that as soon as you apply, you’ll have access to the full IGCSE course online, in the form of pdfs. If you prefer to work from a book in addition to the pdfs you can choose this option before checkout.

When I receive your enrolment, I’ll email a short questionnaire, which should only take 5 - 10 minutes to complete. When you’ve returned it we’ll have a short phone conversation to plan your 6 topics, each of which comprise a chapter in the course. Each chapter has exercises and an assignment, which you should email to me (phone photos are fine).

You’ll also get exam experience in the form of two mock exams. These will be marked with 72 hours. You’ll get full feedback on them, too, and if you’d like to sit extra mocks for a small fee again, that’s fine.

Can I do extra assignments?

Of course. You’ll have access to the full course so if other troublesome areas come to light, we can work on those as well. If you want to submit extra assignments for a small extra fee, that’s not a problem. You’ll get access to all the extra course materials, too, such as annotated anthologies for Edexcel Spec A.

I’ve not done much formal English work but I need to take this exam quickly. Is that possible?

It depends. If you are in your mid to late teens or older, reasonably strong with English and prepared to put in the hours, there’s no reason why not. If you’re younger though and/or find English challenging, I’d recommend taking the full course and going at a more comfortable pace.

What if I run out of time or want to defer to a later exam sitting?

Not a problem. The most important thing is to do the exam when you feel ready, which hopefully you will be by the time you finish the course. If it all feels a bit of a rush, however, you can defer to the next exam sitting. In this situation you might want to convert to the full course and get a more thorough grounding in all the topics. Just message me and I’ll set it up. You just have to pay the difference.

Can I type my assignments?

Only if you have dispensation to do so in the exam (or intend to get dispensation), otherwise, it’s got to be handwriting I'm afraid. We can all type more quickly than we can write so typing assignments gives an unrealistic expectation of what you can produce in the exam (and what it will look like!).

How do I apply?

Simply go to the courses page, select the Exam Preparation Course and complete the enrolment form. You’ll receive a welcome email with a password to log onto your course. Within 24 hours you’ll get the questionnaire and as soon as you’ve completed and returned it, and we’ve chatted, you can make a start.
